Maria Galindo launched Tianguis Peoria in June 2017, inspired by fond memories attending outdoor markets in Mexico as a child. “Tianguis is an indigenous word and tradition that dates back to Aztec times,” she explains. “Known throughout Mexico as a weekly open-air market, vendors would travel from town to town and pop-up business.” Similar tianguis can now be found throughout the United States.
When Maria’s brother, Arturo, and his wife, Carla, purchased the building at Pecan and Adams which now houses Casa de Arte, it was the perfect opportunity to share this tradition with Peoria. “Every Saturday, the market will have entrepreneurs—crafters, artists and direct-sell consultants—selling their products,” she explains, “and we’ll have Mexican food and live entertainment to create a fun, family experience.”
